Natural remedies for depression and associated illnesses

can help one to relax, and calm down as well. A tincture of Skullcap, or in taken orally in capsule form, induces relaxation, and sleep; it also nourish the nervous system. Valerian capsules, or tincture, also can be used as a sleep-aid.

Depression

Usually attributed with feelings of being powerless, out of control of one's life, despair, hopelessness, depression is mostly manifested as a feeling of extreme sadness, basically. One should never forget that depression is not a cause of the imbalance, it is merely a symptom; remember to look for the factors that are causing the imbalance. Consider whether or not you have had plenty of sleep recently, whether you may have a chemical or hormonal imbalance, a longing for affection, or light, whether or not your adrenal glands are exhausted, any recent life changing events, or personal losses. Asking yourself these questions can help you get an idea of what kind of support, or help you may need to balance yourself out. Most people suffer from a feeling of isolation, which can make the prospect of seeking help seem not worth the trouble, or too challenging to approach. Seeking help is the first step to feeling better, and makes the most difference, because if you don't look for help, you won't find it.

The most common symptoms of depression are constant irritability, long periods of sadness, not being able to sleep, or the desire to sleep as often as possible, or constantly being tired, continuous feelings of being unworthy, worried, or guilty, a significant decrease or increase in appetite, losing the ability to concentrate effectively, crying for a prolonged period of time, repeatedly, or thoughts of harming oneself, or committing suicide.

St. John's Wort can be used to treat feelings of stress and, intense tiredness. A tea made with Lemon Balm, or a tincture, can be used for nervousness, or to relieve an unsettled stomach. Lemon Balm can also soothe, and ease the nerves when one is experience intense anxiety. Kava is another popular remedy for anxiety, and is also a sleep aid. Some herbal combinations and remedies can have counter-effects when used with antidepressant prescription medication, so one should always check with their physician or whomever wrote their prescription before mixing herbal remedies with current medication.

There are also nutrients that are beneficial in easing and relieving depression. Being deficient in vitamin C, and various B vitamins, is associated with depression. When sleep is disrupted, Calcium and Magnesium are especially helpful, and also soothe and ease tense or anxious nerves. These nutrients help the brain to produce neurotransmitters, and if one is taking them as prescribed, may enhance the effects of antidepressant medication. Other things to consider are whether one is getting plenty of good exercise, which is possibly the best natural antidepressant. Too much caffeine, smoking, and drinking are counterproductive as well, and should be avoided. Depressive behaviour can be aided through counseling also, and with therapy, whether it be with a group, or alone. Many people do well in groups, with real people who can support each other, whereas other are more suited to discussing their personal problems alone. Never procrastinate if you are having suicidal thoughts along with depression. In extreme cases, where you may want to inflict harm upon yourself or others, seek help or contact someone you can trust to help you find someone to talk to. Always consult a medical professional, or your therapist before taking any for of alternative medicine with pre-prescribed medications; neglecting to do so can cause counterproductive effects or accidental overdose.
