While it cannot be statistically proven, it appears that the number one cause of divorce in this country is money! Money may not buy happiness, but the lack of it can certainly be blamed for a great deal of misery.
Few couples ever enter into a marriage with a clear-cut plan for financial security. Once they shake the rice out of their hair, they settle into this comfortable little family lifestyle, not realizing that they never made any provisions for the long haul. Oh sure, they purchased this cute little colonial style home, but it's going to take two incomes to satisfy the mortgage. And now, instead of one car payment there's two. Don't think for a minute that the reduced rate your insurance company gives you for multiple vehicles will even begin to compensate for it.
In spite of two incomes, many couples today live paycheck to paycheck. There are those few chosen ones who were wise and signed up for an IRA account (which could get split in the event of a divorce), but that does little to help when the mortgage is due now. Then one of them loses their job. And, oops, that family planning idea kind of ran amuck somewhere along the way. Whatever the reason, out lives are full of surprises and catastrophes that are never planned.
Second in line is infidelity. That sounds like an awful fancy word when,.in fact, it should be called what it is: cheating! Both men and women alike are to blame for this malady, and once the trust has been broken it is very difficult to gain it back. You will hear all kinds of excuses as to why' they cheated, right down to blaming their partner, but we are all responsible for our own actions and should be acceptant of them. Merely ask yourself, "Is this moment worth losing my spouse over?"
The third cause of divorce could well be the underlying cause of the other two: communication! If you don't have communication in a marriage you may as well have gotten a dog. Remember the romantic conversations that the two of you shared under the stars or when you picnicked next to the lake? You are the same two people that held those hopes and dreams. You merely need to get yourselves back in sync.
When planning your nuptials, also plan your future. A budget is not "old fashion" and sticking to it is commendable. Plan for the unexpected. Bad things do happen to good people, and it's a lot easier to ride out the storm in a ship rather than a raft. Set aside a date night! Of course you can afford it, because it's right there in that budget'. And, you can do a lot with a few candles and a good bottle of wine.
Keep it open, keep it honest and keep it real.
