Fantasy football: Choosing between a one-year or continuing league

Fantasy football has become a very successful enterprise over the years; now with every sports site offering their own brand of fantasy, coaches have never had it so good. It could also be related to the sad fact that NFL football and dreaded league "parity" has taken hold, plenty of mediocre teams all knocking each other off from week to week.

The saving grace of any season (especially when your own team is wallowing in the depths of the division) can be a good fantasy football league. Set up in a well run game and fantasy is a very nice addition to any football season. The best leagues are keeper leagues, where team building can be achieved through careful player acquisition and trades over a number of years. A one year league is different, where emphasis is placed directly on having a good draft for that season.

Having a new draft each and every year at least ensures that the talent pool is randomly distributed across the teams, many leagues maintain coaches from previous seasons so invariably there's a decent chance that a player you missed out on one year could fall to you another season. It also enables coaches to try out differing strategies without any fear of destroying a team as you don't have any team to start with!

As strange as it may sound but playing in a keeper league creates a bond between the coach and players on your team. You may support a particular team in the real world but because you start to rely on "rival" players in the NFL, a bizarre relationship is born where you'll be looking out for these individuals from week-to-week, scanning the games, highlights and stats to see how your franchise players are performing.

This could be said for one-year leagues but is less intense because you may only have them for that season. Fantasy gives any participant a greater insight to all players of the NFL in general, and maybe more respect for their performances on the football field. Every yard gained or lost is now vital when it could be the determining factor in winning or losing for your fantasy team.

The keeper league is by far the best option when playing fantasy, you can invest in the future by picking up "sleeper" players a year or two before they hit the big time, with good judgment it isn't too difficult to build a championship team from what amounts to a collection of no-names to Bowl winners.

Picking up low-profile players in their rookie year and seeing them develop into starters has got to be one of the most satisfying moments in keeper
