Is drinking a sin for a Christians? I believe this is only a question that can be answered by each person as an individual. But, of course I have my opinion.
When I became a Christian it was back in the disco days, where I enjoyed going to clubs and dancing and entering contests. I remember when I walked down the isle to accept Christ I asked the pastor if I would still be able to disco dance. I loved his answer, just loved it! I think it was one of the greatest answers a pastor could give. He told me that if God didn't want me to continue with disco dancing, that he would replace it with something I enjoyed much more. No judgment, no, you can't do that. A simple, straight from the heart answer. "You want to know how it ends, don't you? I'm not telling just yet."
At first I looked at drinking as a kind of poison. I didn't want to do something to offend my Heavenly Father, until I knew it was okay. So, I didn't drink for a long time. Then I went out with friends, other Christians who would have a drink or two. I started to think, okay this seems like it isn't a poison and will hurt anything. So, I would have a drink or two on occasion.
When it comes to Christianity I think it is a personal choice at what we allow ourselves to partake in. I don't think one person has the right to tell another what is right. What is right and placed on one heart is not always the same for another. We have to allow each other to be individuals and walk our own paths. As God allows us to walk those paths as individuals. The person telling you no, don't do that won't be there on your judgment day. Just you and you alone. And you won't be judged on what that person did, but on what you did.
If we believe something is a sin and do it anyway, then I think that is how we will be judged. I know God puts in all our hearts what he wants from us. So it all depends on the person. Is drinking a sin for Christians? Only if you believe it is. I don't think drinking is a sin. I believe getting drunk every night or hurting others because of my drinking is a sin. But, just to have a drink now and then, NO.
Christianity is a personal walk and it is ultimately up to each person to decide what they think is right and just for their life. Not for anyone else's life. Drinking in moderation, drinking at the celebration of your daughters marriage, "where you might tie one on". I think Gods okay with that. I don't think drinking is the sin. I think sin can come from drinking if you drink much more than you should.
Okay, here ya go. Yes, I did dance for awhile and then other things came into my life and the disco dancing wasn't as important to me. It didn't mean that I wouldn't go occasionally, but the pastor was right, my life became full and rich by other means. It just wasn't important to me anymore. Was it a sin to go and dance, "No I don't think so." Did God mind if I did it occasionally? "I don't think so. God filled my life and I lived it as I felt was right in his eyes." I think that is all we can really do.
