I wanted bright pink hair. I had my mind made up and there was nothing that was going to stop me. I was going to look like one of those beautiful, punky girls who I always looked at and admired for how brave they were to do whatever they wanted! I was sure that when my hair was dyed I was going to be a completely different person. Someone who did whatever they wanted, always spoke their mind and was envied by everyone around me.
I spent hours in the bathroom sopping pink, gooey gel onto my hair to make sure I got every spot. Obviously I didn't want any of my mousy blond hair peeking through! 25 minutes seemed to take forever to pass as I sat on the edge of the tub tapping impatiently for my new and improved self to be done. Finally when I thought the wait would never be over, my timer went off and I hopped into the shower to wash the goo out of my hair. As I watched the pink run down the bathroom drain in a spiral, all I could do was think about how cute I was going to look with my new hair color. No more blending into the crowd for me!
Emerging from the shower I dried my hair as quick as I could and ran into the kitchen to show my fiance. His face said it all. Shocked and worried I immediately ran for a mirror and realized that my hair had been ruined! My once nice, boring, wavy hair had soaked up all of the color it could and turned into a fuchsia colored, frizzy mess. Suddenly everything I had thought about having pink hair came crashing down around me. I didn't have bright pink, silky hair. I wasn't brave enough to want to stand out in the crowd all of the time, and there was nothing wrong with mousy blond hair after all!
That night I spent hours attempting to wash the color out of my hair with different shampoos, soaps, even alcohol and witch hazel, only to have it become paler and frizzier than it had been the first time I dried it. After admitting defeat and realizing that the color was permanent, I chose a dark red hair dye to color over it. By the time the evening was over, I was seriously feeling traumatized by the experience, had dark red and fuchsia colored hair, and was thankful that I worked from home and didn't have to face any coworkers the following morning.
