I first started playing darts when I was in college. It seemed that everybody had a dartboard in their room. Some had the traditional corkboard dartboard and others had the newer electronic ones with the soft tips. I started playing alot because everybody on my dorm hall was playing it.
When I got out of college and came home there were dart leagues at just about every sports bar that I went to. Darts had taken off like a supersonic jet. The cool thing was that even the ladies were playing it too. When I went to the bar I didn't care about dancing or having conversations all I was worried about was playing darts.
I still play darts to this very day. About one weekend a month I play at a friends house. A bunch of us play, so it could be at either one of our houses. One guy has the traditional dartboard and the other one has an electronic one. Wherever we play at we are certain to play till the wee hours of the morning.
We have been known to play for money but most of the time it is just us, a couple cases of beer, the radio, and the intense drive to play darts. We mainly play 'Cricket'. Me and my compadres' are pretty good throwers and our games usually are over in a quick manner. Several of us have done good in the local dart leagues and one of my friends won a tournament just a couple of months ago in which he won $100.
I am a huge fan of the weighted darts. Darts come in a light and heavy variety. The way I throw darts, the weighted dart just seems to fit my trajectory of throwing perfect. I have had more success with the heavier dart. I use the lighter dart on occassion, but I just throw alot better with a heavier dart.
I don't really have any bias towards the traditional or electronic board. I have tailored my game to the point that I know what to expect when playing on either one. The traditional dartboard will be played with the sharp dart and therefore requires a throw that will enable the dart to stick in the board. The electronic dartboard on the other hand requires the soft tip dart. As long as you hit the number square, the electronic dartboard will give you credit for a score even though it did not stick into the board. Some people like this, some people don't. Me and my crew have learned to live with it.
My favorie game to play by far is Cricket. This is the game that is so famous in the Irish Pubs. I like to play 501 and 301, but Cricket will always be my favorite game to play when it comes to throwing darts. There's no better feeling than winning a game of Cricket with the famous double/single bullseye.
So, from the shores of the Eastern Shore of Virginia keep on throwing them darts and keep the spirit of one of more popular games worldwide going in extreme fashion.
