In card games, everything can change with the turn of one card. Some games require more skill and strategy, others, like War, are based mostly on luck. Either way, the luck of the draw (or deal) plays heavily into your chances of winning. This can be frustrating when the cards aren't with you, but there's always the hope that the next card will turn it around.
Human beings are social creatures. While some are more outgoing than others, people generally enjoy spending time with the people who are important to them. Young kids may think of cards as just another game to play with their friends, but for families and adult friends, a weekly (or monthly) card game is a great way to stay in touch.
Between work, taking care of a house, kids, or older parents, and other daily obligations, it's all too easy for adults to lose touch with friends or family. Scheduling in a regular card night can sometimes be tricky, but it's well worth the effort.
Laughing and talking is all a part of card playing and the more often a group plays together, the closer they become with shared jokes and memories. This is one way that traditions are built. Parents teach children how to play card games and when kids grow up playing cards, they will often teach their own children to play as well, continuing the tradition.
For all of these reasons, popular card games have stood the test of time. While variations and house rules, and even advances in computers, will continue to evolve the games, they will never go out of style.
