Tips for avoiding tantrums in toddlers

WARNING! If you have a toddler that throws tantrums, this could be painful for you to read. The truth does hurt at times and it can also be an opportunity to do something different so you can reap different results. .I am annoyed by some parent's behavior at times. Not that anyone else can really annoy me....I actually understand that annoyance comes from me so, in a weird way, I actually choose to be annoyed.

Here is an example of a time when I chose to be annoyed! Please continue reading with EXTREME CAUTION, you might have run across this woman in the grocery store, or worse yet, maybe YOU ARE this woman!

There was a little girl running around her mother's legs in the checkout line. The little girl drew out her words in a long whiny voice as I stood in line at the grocery store."I waaaannnnnnttt soooome candeeeee momeeeee."

"No Madyson, you can't have any candy and quit that whining!" Her mother snapped.

"But I waaannnnt sommme. I waaannnnt some candeeeee." Came Madyson's whiny reply."

Again the obviously frustrated mother snapped at her child. "Ugh! I can't stand that whining Madyson, stop it!"

The child didn't seem to notice her mothers angry, frustrated voice and although the mother seemed truly annoyed, I was absolutely astonished when the mother grabbed a couple of candy bars and threw them in her basket as she said, "There, you have the candy you wanted. NOW will you stop whining? Are you happy NOW?"

Most of the time I had my five small children hovering around the basket also observing other families. They would look at the mom and look at the kid and then look at me. They would talk about it in the car on the way home.

There are a few things that you must know about whining before you can stop it.

First. Whining is the same thing as a temper tantrum. It also comes in many forms. Did you know rolling of eyes, slouching shoulders, crossing of arms, heavy sighing, and basic bad attitude can be considered whining? That's right! You must know that kids will use whatever works to get their way. If you are like the woman in the grocery store and you give in to your child's whining, the child will use it again and again because quite frankly, it worked! Madyson got just what she wanted. The mother was so annoyed by the whiny voice that she was willing to give in to what her child wanted just to shut her up. This is a short-term solution to a long-term problem. If you reward bad behavior, you invite more! The more you cater to whining. The more whining you
