Everyday angels: Those who help us along the way

Have you ever heard the expression, "God works through people?" The phrase has been around for quite some time and for good reason, it is undeniably true. Whether you believe in God, another supreme being or the nurturing hand of mother-nature, most people can concur with the fact that their lives have been touched by some sort of helping hand or guiding spirit, an angel.

Angels can present themselves in many forms. Some angels are compelled to perform magnificent acts of charity or self-sacrifice. These types of angels are the ones that give selflessly to fight hunger or poverty or perch themselves on the front lines to defend our countries and liberties. Shake the hand of the next service man or woman you encounter, as one day they could give of themselves to save you or someone you love.

Then, there are the angels whose actions are a little more discreet. We often don't recognize these angels, as their subtle gestures don't receive the same recognition as some of the more glorified acts of benevolence. Pay attention however, as these angels work diligently to keep the connection of mankind alive. The smile or kindness of a stranger is another tiny sign that we are not alone in this world and that we all share some sort of common bond.

We also have the angels-in-passing, a friend or acquaintance that comes into your life for a short while, only to direct or connect you to another fate in your life. These types of angels are mysteriously significant, as they share an important part of your life with you and then disappear. The special angels that lead you to a soul mate or opportunity for growth in your life are the ones that are most difficult to forget. My "angels-in-passing" were a married couple I met back in school. We were friends for quite a while, almost inseparable. They introduced me to the man I would marry. Twelve years later, I am still happily married, but my friends moved away and I haven't heard from them since. I know in my heart that they were the conduit to my soul mate and I will never forget them for that.

Take a moment to reflect. Any time your soul has been moved by the generosity of another, you have been touched. When nature cools your brow with a soothing breeze after a labored day, you've been embraced. If a mysterious person has come and gone, you've been provided with guidance. The signs are all around us if we take the time to see them. Have you been touched by an angel lately? Perhaps you are the angel that blessed someone else's life.
