Shopping etiquette: How you should respect others who are helping you

Shopping is meant to be a fun trip for all those involved. Getting a great deal is only half the battle. The other part is practicing good shopping etiquette. Contrary to popular belief, the customer is not always right. You should always treat the person working at the store with respect.

There is never any excuse for a person to belittle another. Just because someone works in customer service, doesn't mean that you get a free pass to abuse him or her. You are no batter than they are and you have no right to judge them. People that work with the public are used to putting up with a lot of crap on a daily basis. You should not add to the drama.

To some people, salesmen are annoying. They feel as though they are invading their personal space or watching their every move. This isn't always true. In most cases, they mean well. They genuinely want to help you pick out a product that suits you.

It is true that some people working in shops and boutiques make a commission off of what they sale. This isn't usually very much but every little bit helps, especially at a low paying job. Part of their eagerness to help you may come from their desire to earn extra cash. You really can't blame them for wanting to make a living.

The fault is not the sales person's no matter what the problem with the product is. If the item you want is out of stock or does not fit, do not throw a fit. It is probable that what you want can be ordered and will be in pretty quickly. If you can't wait, just settle for something else or try another shop.

If the sales person is unbearable or annoying, politely tell them that you would like some time alone to decide on your purchase. Chances are, they will be more than glad to return to their post and let you browse. Never be rude or demanding. That only makes bad situations worse.

If you can not deal with a sales person for whatever reason, politely ask someone else to help you or come back when that person is not working. You have the right to get good customer service. There is just a proper way to handle all situations.

Always stay positive. Be the type of person that you would want to deal with. Offer friendly banter as you shop or check out. Be courteous and friendly. Say thank you. Reward the person, who helped you with a smile, it can go a long way.

Remember that what you do today can effect the actions of tomorrow. You should always treat others, as you want to be treated. You never know when you may face the same situation.
