Memoirs: Family memories

"Family Memories"

I am almost 65 years old and I have so many Family Memories, but here I will only touch on a few of my favorites. The Memories I write of here are from my "Growing up Years" in a Wonderful Family.

First of all, my childhood was pretty normal in most respects. We did not have much money, but well had an abundance of love. There were five siblings, including myself. Three boys and two girls, I being one of the girls. I lost one brother to cancer 8 years ago and I miss him everyday. My father has been gone for 18 years now and my mother has Alzheimer's Disease. She is almost 93 years old and lives in a Nursing Home, because we could not take care of her any longer at home. She does not know any of her family now. We love her dearly, she just doesn't know us.

We all had to do our part as children. My Mother taught my sister and I to cook and bake. We always enjoyed being in the kitchen with her, it smelled so good. We also learned to do the laundry and clean. When we were learning to do the laundry; we had a wringer washer and rinse tubs with a wash board. I can't believe it now, but my sister and I used to actually love doing that laundry. We have it so much easier now. The boys had their jobs too; such as mowing grass, feeding the chickens, because we lived on a farm. Dad kept them all busy and Mom kept us girls busy.

Mom always baked her own bread, this was one of the best memories I have, especially the smell of it. I never did get the knack of baking bread like Mom. When we were young, Mom was always home, she did not work outside the home. That is why we had all the homemade goodies. Once I grew up, I did not have time to do all these things I remember doing as a child, because I was working outside my home. When I came home from work, I had to prepare dinner, clean up and get ready for the next day. I will always remember My Mother's baking with a smile!

Of Course, we had our play time. I remember having a little kitten that we used to dress up in doll clothes. Then put it in a doll carriage and push it around. We had a building out beside our house, that was called the "Wash House". This is where mom had her washing machine. This is also where we played with the kitty, because we could push that carriage back and forth on the wood floor. It seems sort of cruel to me now when I think back, about dressing that kitty up in doll clothes. We didn't hurt it, I promise.

I can remember our front porch on that old farm house. It was all the way across
