I am not Italian, however I love the game Bocce. I have been playing it for many years and it is the expectation of all family and friends that I arrive with at least one of 5 sets ready to go at any event. I know that part of the reason is that it truly is a game that anyone can play and at any time. A form of Bowls, the game revolves around getting closer to a smaller ball with your bocce balls than your opponent.
I have played on professional courts, grass, sand, gravel, carpet and yes even attempted in a parking lot (without success. My children play, my parents will play. It is a sport that attracts attention and crowds, but most importantly it is a great outdoor and addictive game.
I do not pretend to be a great player. I have mastered a few signature moves and a wicked right hand spin, but when playing against a small Italian man 3 times my age I concede to the artistry of the game. Which means I get beat, a lot.
I suggest to everyone to try the game. Sets are extremely affordable and range from $19.95 and up at any hobby or department store.
I do have 5 sets, They range from metal to plastic and everything in between. I do prefer the light fun colors of my stone set and judging by the scratches on the balls, it is my set of choice. The game itself is simple and I think that is part of the appeal.
