Software reviews: Symantec Norton Antivirus (2008)

I'm not stupid - I wanted to protect my computer. I had seen all the reports and heard all of the horror stories. I knew that if I didn't have antivirus protection for my new laptop, I was putting my computer and my personal data at risk. I figured all antivirus programs were essentially the same, so I went with a free program that a friend recommended. I downloaded it from the Internet and figured all was fine, and things were for several months. Then one day, the computer started to do weird things. It operated sluggishly and constantly locked up. I couldn't get anything accomplished at all!

I can't say for sure, but the virus probably got onto my computer a couple of days earlier, when my brother; who was visiting from Baltimore, came by with his son. The kid was bored so I let him "play with my laptop" while my brother and I sat on the porch; reminiscing about old times. I never did discover how the virus actually launched itself on my computer. I did learn that; when it comes to antivirus programs, you get what you pay for!

I didn't know who to be more upset with: the friend who recommended the free antivirus program, my nephew, or myself for not spending the extra $34.99 on Norton Antivirus 2008. I had no choice but to blame myself. I've had Norton Antivirus on my PC at work for years and have never had a problem. When the rest of the world was getting a myriad of viruses, my office computer protected with Norton Antivirus kept humming along. I certainly couldn't afford to buy another laptop, so I rushed to the store to get Norton Antivirus 2008; hoping it could get rid of the problem.

When I got home, the first thing I did was uninstall the ineffective free antivirus program that I had been using. I then popped the Norton Antivirus 2008 CD into my computer and let it do its thing. After accepting the user agreement and entering the product key, Norton Antivirus 2008 performed a pre-install scan of my computer to check for malware that could prevent successful installation. Bingo! Within seconds, Norton Antivirus 2008's pre-install scan found the culprit; a variant of the Storm Worm Trojan, and successfully removed it. The pre-install scan finished shortly thereafter and I was free to start installing Norton Antivirus 2008.

During the installation process, I registered my copy of Norton Antivirus 2008 and ran LiveUpdate, which checked for the latest security updates from Symantec, the makers of Norton Antivirus 2008. After a system reboot, I was able to begin
