My Pledge to Humanity
My promise to myself, has been to show compassion to others, and common curtesy to others in this world. "Treat others as you would like to be treated youself," was taught to me as I was growing up. Just to acknowledge someone when you are walking with your dogs in the early morning is part of my pledge to humanity. By acknowledging someone can give you pleasure and those few words can make that persons day. I can tell you that it does mine, because sometimes out there of a morning walking you can feel so alone after the night before with a alcoholic husband in your home. But really life has given me so much with my daughters and their husbands, my dogs, and the friendly people I have worked with at the Salvation Army.
Life has given me so much, I just feel that I would like to give something back to the world. I have worked with a lovely group of elderly people, unfortunately I was forced by poor health, and depression to give up the work I was doing. Now I call in at the local Salvation Army Community Center every other week to see the elderly people I worked with, the look on their faces when they see me walk in is enough for me. Sometimes I feel like crying when I see them, just that few minutes that I stop and talk with my lady friends is long enough to put a smile on their faces for the day.
To show humanity towards other living things is so important in life, opens up your heart to a whole new world. I have found in life that you get back out of life what you put into life.
What has helped me so much over the past nine and a half years is the pledge that I made to my dogs. I have loved and cherished Tibby and Charlie, which has helped me look after myself a great deal more than I ever used to and care for others differently than before I fell ill with depression. My dogs taught me to care for the birds and animals around us even in a small city close to the Adelaide Hills.
The same as the day I gave birth to my daughters, was to look after them and nurture them till until they were ready to leave home. Now when they come home and visit they are teaching me to care differently and show me that I am different now. Stronger than ever before, which has given me a different respect from my daughters.
This has been my pledge to humanity is to care for others, and all animals how I would like to be cared for myself.
