Guide to Handbags

The thought of owning a handbag is so contagious that there's a website dedicated to renting and buying designer handbags. To some women, buying handbags in a multitude of prices and designers are unavoidable because these stylish staples satisfy the requirements of being a woman. Handbags can put the fantastic finishing touch on a great outfit.

Shoulder Bags

Also called "day bags," these bags are meant to be worn on the shoulder hence the name. Jackie Onassis Kennedy had a hand in catapulting both the popularity of the shoulder bag and the designer brand Gucci. Consequently, after fashion addicts saw the First Lady wearing Gucci's Constance shoulder bag, Gucci renamed it the "Jackie O" bag.

Briefcases

Common in the 14th century, these professional bags weren't always called briefcases. In fact, they were called "budgets," which in Latin means "leather bag." Typically made of a rectangular design with an equally rectangular handle, the briefcase has evolved to cater to women entering the workforce. A good example is Grace Kelly's Hermes bag, which was similar to a briefcase.

Pashmina

This cashmere wool has been spun into shawls, scarves, sweaters and numerous other items, including bags. Mandala bags, created by Preeti Chawla, are a combination of pashmina wool and silk yarn. Each bag has embroidery and intricate beading, which is all done by hand. Consumers have a choice of seven colors black, red, pink, lilac, charcoal, gray and brown.

Totes

This carryall can also be called a "shopper," which is used for purchased goods. The appeal of the tote bag is that it's versatile. Even though the basic style stays the same a large, open bag with two handles the choices are endless in fabric and colors. Last year, the most famous tote stated, "I'm Not a Plastic Bag," courtesy of London designer Anya Hindmarch.

Wallets

This holder has truly made an interesting journey from the 1600s to present day. Aside from elegant leather, you have the option to purchase other types of material and styles. Depending on your needs and tastes, you can choose a generic wallet or a designer brand. These hold everything from money to various credit cards, I.D.s, and miscellaneous items.
Tote Tags

Sold by Making Memories, these monogrammed designer tags were made so that your "bag will do everything but blend in." Unfortunately, Tote Tags are only available in only pink, green or black. On the bright side, they can be easily attached to luggage by a buckle. Of course, you can always buy or make your own tags for your luggage.

Neckties

Neckties aren't only for men. Women are wearing them too as bags! The most popular necktie bags are made of 100% silk designer neckties. Designer Sonya Nimri did a segment on necktie purses for Smart Solutions on the Home and Garden Network (HGTV). For those with a penchant for individuality, no two necktie bags are alike so you can look forward to owning an original creation.

Beaded Purses

Throughout history, women have been entranced by the beauty and status statements that a little beaded purse could evoke. These lavish masterpieces use beads to create numerous designs. Some popular beaded purses are coin purses and novelty purses. A beaded purse is truly an indispensable staple to anyone from the fashion conscious to purse collectors.

Messenger Bags

Although similar to shoulder bags, modern day messenger bags can be traced back to their roots in New York City in the 1950s. The messenger bag can also function as a unisex book bag. These rectangular bags are casual yet cool fashion statements. There are numerous opportunities to customize and personalize, highlighting the fact that the wearer is as unique as the bag.
