England's most famous soccer players

A number of great players have been lucky enough to play for the England national team. It is quite unfortunate that some of the best players did not find their way to fame like those of the present day due to the lack of mass media that has only developed fully in the last few decades.

Being from the UK, it is quite difficult to suggest which players are famous on a global level. I know for fact that I could name perhaps four American Football players (all of which play for the Patriots) so this may well be the same case for other nations who are attempting to name English soccer players. Nonetheless, I will have a go at naming who I think are the most famous players to wear the Three Lions' on their shirt.

First, an honourable mention must go to those players who have (had) obvious talent but were not famous per se. First of all, Sir Geoff Hurst is often unbelievably overlooked when we talk about the best English players ever. The former West Ham United striker scored 24 goals in only 49 England appearances including a hat-trick in the 1966 World Cup Final victory against West Germany. To this day, Hurst is the only player ever to have scored three goals in a World Cup Final. His third goal goes hand in hand with the famous commentary, the crowd are on the pitch, they think it's all over, it is now.'

The Munich air disaster on 1958 which tragically ended the lives of a number of Manchester United players, was a great loss to friends, family and English football. Amongst those was potentially the best ever English player in Duncan Edwards. Edwards lost his life at the tender age of 22 and those who were lucky enough to witness him play claimed that he would have gone on to be one of the footballing greats.. He only ever managed 18 England caps, making his international debut at the age of just nineteen, after being a regular in the Manchester United first team from seventeen years old. Duncan Edwards never had the chance to generate any sort of fame and it is very unlikely that he was ever really known on a global level but at the time his talent was second to none.

Instead of dwelling on some of the other players, whose talent deserved fame but it never arrived, I'm going to list a few who merited some sort of attention. Jimmy Greaves was possibly one of the greatest goalscorers that the country has ever seen with 44 goals in 57 international games. Sir Bobby Moore was England captain in the 1966 World Cup and is possibly the best defender that the country has
