Book reviews: Matter, by Iain M. Banks

as he matches not only his subjects to his setting, but also the way in which he writes about them as well. Layers within layers within layers. Very few writers could attempt this and end up with a perfectly coherent novel at the end of it, but Banks manages it, and with lashings of style.

Literary merit aside, the characters of 'Matter' are well written, fully developed, and realistic. The reader finds themselves warming to the foolish, overproud, but ultimately noble Ferbin, laughing at the antics of his long suffering servant, reviled by the actions of the power hungry dictator tyl Loesp and moved by the self sacrificing actions of hard headed Djan. It's hard not to relate to the characters, and it's this that makes their actions and fates all the more poignant and emotive.

The plot is unpredictable, gripping, and has a great sense of suspense that builds towards what is literally an explosive climax. Without wishing to give to much away I have to say that this has to be one of the greatest endings to a book that I've personally read in many years. Just when you think it's all over, Banks is there to throw one last mind wrenching twist in at the close. Banks doesn't patronise the read by spelling it all out for you, he makes you think, and for doing so you are rewarded with a story that will stay with you long after you finish physically reading the novel.

'Matter' is an intelligent and thought provoking science fiction novel that is an essential read for any fans of Banks and his Culture novels. To those who have yet to read any of his other novels, it's a great introduction to a master of the science fiction genre writing at the very peak of his profession. He is quite literally the best science fiction writer around at the moment. Banks just keeps getting better, I can only wait with immense anticipation for his next novel to be released.

5/5 A masterpiece from a master of science fiction.
