used, and altered, all of the mentioned villains. Some of the changes made the characters more interesting while some characters were changed too much.
One example of a good change is Bizarro. The standard version of Bizarro is an imperfect clone of Superman who does things in a backwards way compared to the real Superman. He speaks in opposites and has been seen as a member of the Legion of Doom rather than the Justice League. He is not really evil, however. He is simply misguided and taken advantage of by people like Lex.
I find the Smallville version of Bizarro more interesting. This version really is the opposite of Clark. While Clark would never intentionally kill someone, Bizarro Clark does. This Bizarro also speaks normally, which I like. I find the backwards speech of the traditional Bizarro irritating.
A character change that I did not like is Mr. Mxyzptlk. In the comics and cartoons, Mxy is an imp from the 5th Dimension who is obsessed with Superman. He uses his magical abilities to create problems for Clark and has a fit every time Clark outsmarts him. I have always found this character very amusing. Smallville's version of Mxyzptlk is nothing like the comic book version. The Smallville character is a human who has the ability to jinx people. That's it. No 5th Dimension. No battle of wits. No pouting when Superman gets him to say his name backwards sending him back to the 5th Dimension. This character was incredibly disappointing.
Smallville's impact on the Superman mythology has been so big that it is even affecting the comic books. For sometime now there have been reports that DC Comics is adding Chloe Sullivan into its continuity starting in 2008. According to Comixology.com, Chloe will be making her appearance in Superman #675 which is due out in April. For fans of the Superman comics, and Chloe, this is pretty cool news.
