The life of John Paul Jones

coast of England, bringing the war to British turf. He practiced terrorism, but not like the Muslims extremists that we associate the word with today. He attacked and raided supply ships in order to intimidate the British and keep them from getting weapons to their troops, killing as few people as possible in the process. The English people considered him a pirate because of this, but if you look at it from their point of view, it does make sense.

Let's move on to the second definition, "One that shows great courage," In the midst of John's most famous battle, the battle of the Serapis, Jones ship, the Bonhomme Richard was struck and began to sink. As it slowly took on water, the captain of the Serapis called out asking "Has your ship struck?" In other words, he was asking Jones if he wanted to surrender. All Jones said in reply was "I have not yet begun to fight," Moments later, the crew of the Bonhomme Richard had boarded the Serapis , and Jones had won the battle.

Now on to the last definition, "A man admired for his achievements and noble qualities," Although John Paul Jones has been left out of many high school textbooks and curriculum as of late, which is quite a shame, he is still studied at the United Sates Naval Academy, and many people are familiar with the valiant navy man who was brave enough to challenge the English on their own turf. In fact, there have been over 30 biographies of him published!

In spite of his most valiant efforts, congress refused to promote him to the position of Admiral. John Paul Jones died of jaundice in 1792 in the city of Paris, France and was buried in a small cemetery. In 1905, Jones's body was found and taken back to America. He now lies in a well earned place of honor in the United States Naval Academy Chapel. John Paul Jones was an American navy hero whose story will live on the hearts and minds of patriotic Americans everywhere.
