Like the rest of the problems we have caused, the scarcity of clean safe water to drink has been fought by some of the best minds in the international community. Deserts still are getting larger and more numerous in spite of the United Nation Environment Programme.
Climate change and human activities are blamed for the degrading of water resources.
Our modern way of life is wasting water and degrading the land so that even water wells and springs are contaminated so you cannot trust them as secure drinking water. Pipes once approved for carrying drinking water inside homes have been found to cause cancer and those pipes are still being sold and recommended for water pipes in spite of the warning written on the pipe itself.
There is an astounding overuse of water in the developed world and that is being accepted as normal in the developing world. Bathtubs and Jacuzzis use about fifty gallons of water compared to a few gallons formerly used to bathe. Pools, dishwashers, toilets, and running water waste water and add pollution to the water system. Agriculture and industrialization are dumping fertilizers and other harmful chemicals into the water degrading waterways and rivers that pollute lakes and oceans.
The United Nations Environment Programme is devoted to "environment for development" and that is the problem. It is development that is destroying land and water as well as the air we breathe. We thought the goal in life was employment, so we developed many ways to employ people, buying and selling just to keep people employed. The exhausts and dripping of oil and gas of millions of automobiles and trucks transporting food and goods is washed off the roads and into every little creek and river. The energy crisis could be a blessing in disguise to make us realize we need to shut that down. If there were nothing to take its place we could be facing starvation and wars over scarcity of food and goods; but there is a better way.
There was a time in all nations when the water was pure and available to all. The solution to restore clean drinking water is to realize the goal in life is retirement in a garden paradise that we can start now. When everything is grown locally, the lands and water systems are restored to productivity and purity. Small family plots of 4x4 garden boxes can grow more vegetables than a fifteen foot garden line. We should be planting fruit and vegetables around our house and communities as landscaping with usefulness for food above and beyond the
