Don't let the word of mouth fool you - it is largely impossible to download megamillion dollar games on the internet. Clients like BitTorrent and Limewire (peer-to-peer software) are great - if you have an actual copy of the game. If you don't, however, then by installing the downloaded game and using someone else's CD-key, you are breaking the law. I hate to rain on anyone's parade, but in cases like this, it's safer to simply pay for the game outright than risk discovery and fines.
As Obi-Wan said, though, there are alternatives. If you can lower your quality standards a tad, there are some great MMOs out there that are creeping up in numbers. Maple Story, a cartoony, 2D side scroller, has over 1.5 million players in it's English speaking version, and well over 25 million players worldwide. The best thing about this game is it's free to download and free to play monthly.
Another such game is Ryzom, now called Ryzom Ring. It features a downloadable client and no monthly fee, much like Maple Story, however it also ups the ante in a few key ways. Firstly, Ryzom Ring is full 3D. For a free game, the graphics at times are simply amazing. Ryzom Ring also has something that no other online game offers - the chance to make your own quests and adventures. You the player can function as the "Dungeon Master", and create quests your fellow players can experience. Many players use this feature to add to the already quite in depth lore of the game.
For those that like First Person Shooters, the army offers America's Army: Special Forces, a free to download and free to play online FPS. The game garnered enough attention to spawn XBox and Playstation 2 versions. One of the key features of this game is it's online play. Being a product of the United States Army, it has a strong community feel, and gives insights into the realities that our soldiers face. Add that to the game actually being fun to play, and you have yourself one amazing product, for everyone's favorite price.
All in all, if you do a little research and dig through sites like Download.com, you can come up with some free, fun, and (most-importantly) legal ways to get your gaming fix without spending a single penny.
