Getting started with HotBasic

were now writing software by first drawing a picture (a window) and then writing code later. While many developers liked this approach, as time went on, many old-timers started recognizing the trend-the language was now less a language and more a collection of cryptic code and visual objects. And have you tried compiling a program in Visual Basic .Net recently? Ever notice what happens? If you have, you know what I'm talking about-any simple program turns into ten or twenty files created by the compiler, and you have no idea what's what. You're locked into the IDE whether you like it or not because writing a Visual Basic program in a Notepad-like editor is no longer feasible.

So these developments have left many programmers longing for the old days when programs could be written in a language that's readable, easy to work with, and can be written in a simple top-down approach in any text editor of choice. Well, I am very happy to announce that those days are back. Software developers longing for a programming language and compiler built on classic BASIC with all the power and features of all other modern compilers need to wait no longer-it's here.

It's called HotBasic. Programmers of the world, rejoice!

HotBasic turns the current trend of rapid application development on its head. I truly believe HotBasic is a revolution waiting to happen, but the word just hasn't gotten out yet. When the word does get out-and I'm hoping this article helps that along-I believe lots and lots of programmers who are weary of the status quo will quickly make the switch. Why? Well, let's talk about that just a little.

First up, HotBasic is truly based on BASIC. If you felt comfortable writing programs in BASIC on a Commodore 64, TRS-80, or Atari 800 20 years ago, you will quickly find yourself comfortable writing programs in HotBasic. If you learned BASIC well back in the day, the learning curve for HotBasic is almost zilch. The language features a beautifully simple and elegant syntax that even many non-programmers can understand. Many complex operations can also be completed in just a few lines of code. For example, want to display a window? You can do it with three lines of code:

CREATE F AS FORM
END CREATE
F.SHOWMODAL

Do you write business applications that need to write to a backend database? With HotBasic it's a piece of cake. Forget the complexities of ADO; with HotBasic, you can search, create databases and tables, drop tables, insert rows, and everything else by simply passing
