Our body is made for 65% of water and if we loose the 15% of this amount, as can happen if we are abandoned in a desert with nothing to drink, we die.
So, we must drink regularly to:
- recover the water losses due to transpiration (existing also when we don't sweat), to feces and urine excretion and, in minor amount to the expiration from lungs.
- little babies need water even more than adults and are more sensible to thirst, given that water percentage in their body reaches 73% in a 0-6 months baby. So, be careful when you are on the beach with little babies!
- keep efficient the cellular metabolism and the osmotic equilibrium between in and out cells. Among the various organs, our kidneys need a constant water supply, especially if we have a tendency to produce calculi, because water (if contains very little salts, like some mineral waters!) dilutes the fluids in excretion, avoiding salts precipitation inside kidneys.
- clean the stomach from the food residuals after digestion, while it's not good to drink too much water few minutes after lunch because we could dilute the gastric juices, making less efficient and more difficult our digestion.
- provide to the organism the salts dissolved in water.
These salts are formed by many ions:
- SODIUM (Na+)and POTASSIUM (K+), important for cellular metabolism;
- CALCIUM (Ca++), for bones and muscular movements;
- MAGNESIUM (Mg++), an important co-factor for many enzymes,
- CHLORIDE (Cl-) necessary like sodium for cells and for the digestive juices of stomach;
- IODIDE (I-)(added on purpose to water systems), necessary for our thyroid gland to regulate the metabolic speed of our body.
- FLUORIDE (F-)(added in minimum amounts like iodide) important for teeth growth and for dacay prevention.
