May I Have This Dance
To the blonde, sitting all alone he asks,
May I have this dance?
He bows his head for fear of not getting
This one special chance.
For you see, he is not a man
That is all there is to be,
He was in the war and lost both legs
Amputated at the knee.
(Chorus)
May I have this dance,
This one special chance
For a spin with you,
Such a beautiful lady
I thought that maybe
It's the least I could do.
If but for one song
We could sway along,
Please take my hand,
Lead you to the floor
As we dance, even more
As we listen to the band.
He wears prosthetics, to get around
In this cruel world of sneers,
Shunned away because he is not whole
So he lives with his fears.
She holds out her hand for him
To lead her to the floor,
Together they swoon and twirl
To a song of Amour.
The song ends and he tells her
With his smiling glance,
I want to thank you
For this one special dance.
He smiles and he turns
To lamely walk away,
She calls out to him
Asking him to please stay.
She tells him you see I sensed fear
From deep within you,
Fear of rejection, of how you look,
This much I knew.
But how he wonders,
She's such a beautiful woman,
How can she tell of my mishap
It's so uncommon.
You see, she continues, for you may
Not have noticed,
It was fate to get us together
If you haven't noticed.
For these two blues eyes
Never could look upon your demise,
For blindness has befallen
These two beautiful eyes.
Without my sight I see beyond
What others cannot,
Their insensitivity makes one feel like
They could be unsought.
You're a handsome man
And I would like a second chance,
If you would honor me
And give me, one memorable dance.
He said madam, it would be an honor
To grace your sweet plea,
Together they embraced and danced
Friends they would be.
As each song ended, it seemed like
It would be the perfect romance,
They would stand apart and ask
May I have this dance?
