Administering first aid to kids, always remember the basics of treatment, "breathing, bleeding, And Fractures". Remembering to cover an injured person with a blanket will help with treating shock
The most important factor when dealing with a child in need of first aid is to remain as calm as possible, if the child is your own you will need to put your emotions aside.
Administering first aid to minor cuts and abrasions is the easy first aid, remembering to clean the injury and insure that it stays clean is the important part to dealing with minor cuts. Remember to cover the injury with a clean bandage, never touch the inner area of the bandage, this could cause transfer of bacteria from your hands or gloves, you do not want this injury to become infected.
First aid for deep wounds can be a bit tricky, always remember to apply pressure to the wound, deep wounds will not clot easily, and sutures are usually the only course of action to getting the bleeding under control.
If a deep wound involves arterial bleeding you will need to move very quickly, arterial bleeds are easy to diagnose, if you see the blood spurting out in a stream then you are dealing with an arterial bleed, Call 911 immediately and tell the operator the type of injury.
Arterial bleeds can be fatal if not dealt with very quickly; application of a tourniquet can be a helpful alternative, just remember to not put the tourniquet on to tightly as you do not want to restrict blood flow to the rest of the body parts.
Burns can be very hard to deal with; common sense is the best tool when dealing with a burn. Small burns are best dealt with by applying a cool clean cloth on the effected area, never put any oil based products on a burn, the old fashion butter treatment is not at all a treatment for a burn.
If unsure about the degree of a burn have the child transported to the emergency department.
Electrical shock, this is very tricky, first off call 911, and do not touch the child until you know that there is no further contact with the source of electricity. Once you are able to safely touch the child make sure to look after the breathing aspect. For victims of electrical shock there could very well be other injuries such as burns. Cover the victim with a blanket, perform CPR if needed and stay on the job until the emergency personnel arrive.
Ingesting poisonous substances requires an immediate call to the poison control center and as well could require calling 911, do not take
