Personally, I feel that to win a karaoke contest, one must first of all be confident on stage. Without confidence, no matter how good one's voice is, one will definitely falter. With confidence at hand, half the battle is won. SO then how to win the remaining half? A good voice is without a doubt essential, but learning how to protect your voice is even more important. Therefore before the contest, avoid spicy foods and other foods that may cause you to have a sore throat, which will result in you not being able to perform to the best of your capabilities. Also, drink honey water to nourish your throat and make sure that also you get plenty of rest the night before to ensure that your body is the optimal condition.

With all these done and ensured, next comes the choice of songs. Though many people like to choose songs sung by their favourite singers/bands, it is advisable that you should think carefully before taking that plunge to put the song title. Also, some songs may be easy to sing but then it will take a lot of skills to bring out the essence of the song to impress the judges and thus at times, it may also be good to choose a song with some slight difficulty. Else judges will not be able to give you high marks for an easy song if the other contestants are singing songs of a relatively higher standard and are able to display their vocals in a better light than you.

Once you have decided on the song title,make sure that you practise hard. Don't ever be complacent and think that you can perform well just after a few sessions of practice. One must remember that for a song to impress the judges, a few things must be in place. First, the rhythm must be good and precise. Next, the tone of your voice must not be monotonous and give judges the impression that you are just remembering the lyrics. Third, you must be confident and sing clearly. Don't ever mumble your words and make the judges strain their ears trying to hear what you are singing. Fourth, be confident and even when you stumble at some point, steady yourself and continue with your song unless the judges prompt you to stop. Lastly, never ever forget the lyrics because that will go to show that you are not prepared at all.

For myself, I have always tried to adhere to those points that I have mentioned above and it had never failed me. To me, preparation is half the battle won. As the saying goes, " Plan to fail, fail to plan". As long as you have planned everything, even if you lose you will not be upset because you know that you have truly given your best shot. To lose a battle due to lack of preparation, then you can have no one else to blame but yourself. Therefore, to all the guys and gals out there, do try to adopt my method and see for yourself that you will become a true karaoke champion in no time!
