Is telecommuting right for you?

by Sasha Bella

Created on: March 22, 2008

Today an increasing number of companies are allowing workers to telecommute. This can be a great arrangement for both the employee and the employer under the right circumstances. Telecommuting can save both time and money, while allowing for a more fulfilling job experience. Before deciding if working from home is right for you however, several things should be considered.

First, are you self motivated? Being a self starter is essential if you are going to be productive when working from home. You must be able to make your job a priority and be committed to handling a normal workload throughout the day. Employers will expect you to be fully available during normal business hours. When working from home, you should treat your obligations just as you would if you were physically reporting to the office.

Second, do you have the space? When working from home, you must have an area specifically dedicated to your occupation. The space should allow you to function free from distractions and noise. If young children are in the home during business hours, you must consider whether you will be able to focus and function professionally without interruption. In addition, your work space should be able to accommodate any equipment you will need. Wiring for telephone, computer, and internet connections is almost always a necessity.

Third, will there be any tax implications? Having a home office space can allow you to qualify for additional tax benefits in some situations, and prevent you from qualifying for others. The tax laws can be very strict and detailed. Consulting a tax professional will allow you to properly weigh your options before deciding if telecommuting is right for you.

Finally, will you take time off? When considering working from home, people often assume they will take more frequent breaks than they normally would at the office. Many times, however, this is not the case. When telecommuting, it is easy to fall into the trap of working constantly. Not only do telecommuters regularly work through lunch, but also past normal hours in the evenings and on weekends. Those working from home have to be especially careful to stop themselves when the work day ends.

The decision to telecommute should be weighed very carefully. While it can be extremely convenient and cost effective, it can also have negative implications. Working from home can be an ideal arrangement for both you and your employer if you are properly informed and approach it with realistic expectations.
