Pirates of the Caribbean is the first Johnny Depp movie that I can remember watching to the finish. His portrayal of Capt. Jack Sparrow was the most amusing pirate I have ever seen. However, in all honesty, the movie captured my interest from the beginning. As a little girl stands alone on deck looking out into the thick fog that surrounded her ship.
A special kind of mystery lingered within the fog as the folds parted for that first glimpse of the Black Pearl with her tattered sails. How fortunate that she saves the young man whose piece of pirates gold would bring such adventure to her life. As we leap forward through the years in a blink of an eye, we become acquainted with who our characters have become.
Miss Elizabeth wears the pirates gold close to her heart, right next to place reserved for young Mr. William Turner. However, as a sword maker's right hand man, poor William is beneath Miss Elizabeth in stature and can only dream of claiming such a lady. That does not stop him however, when trouble finally arrives at the port of their fair city.
Captain Jack Sparrow slowly rides his sinking boat into port, reaching dock just as the crow's nest he had been riding in gives way to the ocean below. Stepping onto dock like that sort of thing happens every day; Capt. Sparrow informs the guards that he has come to steal a ship belonging to the Royal British Navy.
His suave, debonair style and charm do nothing to prevent his capture. It only delays it and brings him into contact with young Mr. Turner for an amusing sword fighting seen before guards come to make the arrest. Once in his holding cell, the fellow prisoners recognize Jack as the man who lost his ship to a mutiny. As he is explaining himself, we are taken to Miss Elizabeth and her suitor.
As she loses consciousness caused by her tight corset, Elizabeth plunges off the side of the cliff and into the ocean below. A resonating boom is heard throughout the water as the pirate's gold calls to the Black Pearl. That night the Pearl glides into port with its cursed crew firing canons into the city before disembarking in their search for that single piece of pirate's gold.
Miss Elizabeth is captured by the pirates and invokes the right of Parle, thereby ensuring her safety for the moment. Aboard the Pearl, she attempts to negotiate with the captain for the safety of the city. They agree but keep her on board for the journey to come. Having mistaken her as the offspring of another pirate, they believed she was needed to break the curse they had been enduring.
What the crew did not know is that she was not the person they needed after all. The young son of William 'Bootstrap' Turner was in currently in pursuit aboard the British ship he and Jack had indeed stolen. During the chase, Jack tells William a bit about who his father was and why the pirates had taken Elizabeth. The curse could not be broken without the blood of Bootstrap's child.
How those cursed, pirates longed for the feel of the salt air on their skin or the taste of an apple. To have their thirst quenched and their hunger quieted meant returning the last piece of gold to the chest it had been taken from. Little did they know that Jack would soon be there with his thrown together crew to once again get in their way.
I am not going to tell you the entire story and ruin the movie for you. If you have not for some reason seen Pirates of the Caribbean, go rent it. The laughs alone are worth the few dollars you will spend. Tame enough for all ages, do not be surprised if you end up buying a copy, we did.
