Ikariam is a very new online simulator game trying to compete with games such as Travian. My first impression of the site as well as the game is very good and especially the graphic design is of very high quality. In this game you don't have any options when you are starting it like race or such so you just get put into the role of the mayor of a town. The purpose is to build up a empire with good technology and a lot of citizens. And yeah the action is on islands so you will have to build ships to travel to other people. There is room for a lot of towns on one island, but you would seemingly want to spread out so you can harvest several different resources. I will get back to that later.
The website is as earlier mentioned very nice looking with a lot of good graphic and I love the overall style they have set the graphic work in. It is very cartoon styled, but yet very beautiful looking. It is almost like a more detailed version of Asterix and Obelix drawing style. This is a strategy game meaning it consist of not only peace, but war. You can go to war with other players, but of course you will need warships to reach them. Some of the units in the game include Slinger a ranged fighter equipped with a slingshot. Swordsman that pretty much is what it says in the name and Phalanx named after the Phalanx formation used in combat.
The game is well made with a lot of options how you want to play it and consist of a lot of elements. You need to use a academy to research new things to build or new units to train which I find a nice touch. To build you will need building material and sometimes a special material. Build material is wood that can be harvested on any island. And special materials are wine, marble, sulphur and crystal glass. Every island only have one special material which means you would need to spread out towns or trade with other players to have all of them.
The game and the website is very nice to look at as I mentioned several times which is a major plus for this site. The game is OK, I found it a bit slow moving, but it is definitely entertaining and you don't need to pay real money in it to be one of the best players. Not yet anyway. Everything you see in the game is ideas taken from other which makes me question the creativity of the creators, but I guess they see it work for others and reckon it will for them as well. Let me just say for the fourth time that the site is nice to look at, because beside that the content is just average.
