The case against circumcision

and discomfort because it won't heal properly.

5. Circumcision involves more risk the later it's done in life, so if it is considered necessary, it needs to be performed when the boy is as young as possible.

6. Many people view the foreskin as an important part of the human body that is necessary for the protection of the penis. If the foreskin is removed, the exposed end of the penis may become irritated and cause the opening of the penis to become too small. This may cause difficulty in urinating and may need to be surgically corrected.

7. Although circumcision is often used as a reason for improved hygiene and cleanliness, these can be achieved without the need for an operation if boys are taught the importance of washing thoroughly from a young age.

8. Female circumcision, also known as genital mutilation, is common in many cultures. It is a very painful operation, usually performed without any anaesthetic, to remove some or all of the clitoris, resulting in the opening of the vagina being almost completely sown up in some cases.

Despite its social or cultural supporters, it can result in pelvic and urinary tract infections, low self-esteem and sexuality and unnecessary interference and complications associated with vaginal delivery of babies.

In short, it removes feminine sexuality and has absolute no health benefits. It is a barbaric practice which is totally unsupported by the world's medical profession.

Despite the associated benefits of circumcision, it's important to remember that it's still an operation and a form of cosmetic surgery. There are many problems caused by the operation which may not surface until later in life and so the best thing to do is to think very carefully and consult a doctor there may well be alternative sources of medical intervention which are more effective, less painful and with fewer side effects.
