We play Bocce ball at my house, akin to other families playing card games. It is a great way to spend the afternoon outside with family and friends. You can purchase a set any place that sells sporting goods for as little as thirty dollars.
The first sign of spring our yearly tournament begins. Out comes the balls and a measuring tape. The surface we play on is nearly an acre of grass, trees, bumps and more than a few hidden inclines and declines.
Placement of the coveted "silver ball" also known as the pallina is crucial. We intentionally covered the pallina with foil to better see it. We do not play the standard 76 by 10 field, we play all over the yard so the silver balls is easy to find.
In our family, the men always challenge the women. Teams are chosen, a coin is flipped to see who starts and the battle begins. The first rule is not to hurtle the "silver ball" more than fifteen feet. A player from each teams takes turns throwing their designated balls.
The player that succeeds in getting his ball closest to the pallina scores a point. The object is not only to get close to the pallina, but also to knock the opponents ball away from it.
The friendly feuding adds to the enjoyment of the game. We spend hours playing this game every year. This game boasts of skill, precision, and a great deal of luck, especially in our yard. Throwing with confidence, only to see the ball hit a clump of grass and roll away from the targeted pallina. That my friend, is where luck comes in.
