INTO THE CLOSET
Remember the first computers? A single computer required a large building. How things have changed!
Today, with hand-held devices, laptops, notebooks and other devices, you can set up an office nearly anywhere. If you have power and an internet connection, you can be in business!
Over the years, my own progression has followed the pattern of improved technology, even as my own business has grown. Perhaps this will provide clues for others.
STAIRING UP AT SUCCESS
My first home office was a closet, tucked into the stairwell of our home. I used to tell folks that the slanted ceiling epitomized my uphill future as a freelancer. We crammed a student-sized desk into that space, right under several simple wooden wall-mounted shelves.
Corkboard covered one wall, from the phone jack in the baseboard right up to the light bulb overhead. This held my work orders and timesheets.
BUSINESS IN A BOX
As my accounts-receivable began to pile up, exceeding my accounts-payable, I was able to upgrade my location and equipment. A computer armoire became my next office. This lovely oak wardrobe-like piece weighed a ton. Three burly men had to carry it upstairs to the guest bedroom, but it was worth the effort.
With a drop-down writing surface, interior shelves, and a cozy computer cubby, this item housed my burgeoning business for many years. Transforming an extra bedroom into a profit center made perfect sense. Corporate annual reports, media kits, product catalogs and other pieces emerged from my guest room. Sure, we seldom housed real visitors in those years, but business boomed.
PLUG IT IN ANYWHERE.
Lately, my work has become mobile. With a charged-up power pack and wireless internet, I can write nearly anywhere. Although I now enjoy a real desk, files and an overabundance of bookshelves in my home office, this is not my favorite writing spot.
With laptop in tow, I have carved out special niches for exploring wordsmithing: such as the porch at the stables, a park bench, the kitchen counter, the car or even my own pillow.
Of course, a well-appointed closet (with shelves, file drawers and more) can offer ideal storage space for work-related items, the real accomplishments happen where the action is. With handy portable computerized devices, home business owners are free to come out of their closets and rejoin the world! Come on out! The working's fine!
