Is there one right religion?

Currently there are around two thousand major world religions in the world today, many of which have conflicting ideals and tenants. Despite this they all claim to be the one true religion that they represent the word and teachings of either some form of messiah or even god himself. Or even in some cases themselves, with many religions actually having multiple deities. The idea that there is only one religion that can be right is something that most of them have in common. However for those of us who might be dubious, there seemingly isn't any easy way to tell which is the right one.

To nearly all religions the deities that they believe in are kind and merciful, and so surely to them religion isn't that much of an issue. If for example an Islam was the right religion, and a Muslim who had lived an evil life was being judged next to an inherently good atheist then would that matter to god? Surely if god is merciful and all knowing then the fact that you might have been born into one religion over another is irrelevant compared to whether you are a good person. After all history is littered with religious people who have committed genocide and countless other evil and forbidden acts. Surely those individuals would not be thought of as better than good people who believed in the wrong religion.

The idea that only one of the thousands of religions in the world today is right then also means that the rest are wrong. This would also mean that they are inventions of man and that they aren't representative of a higher power at all. Despite this idea however the fact that most religions have similar or even identical ideals does not support this. In actual fact it suggests that all religions are in fact inventions of man and that while the messages are valid, none of them are literally true.

Surely if any of the religions were literally true then there would have been some kind of proof by now. Back when there were all kinds of world religions springing up, often between one thousand and three thousand years ago, this proof was supposedly seen. God himself spoke to prophets as well as angels appearing and miraculous events occurring that were directly related to the actions of people and gods reaction to this. It seems unlikely that this kind of thing would have been prevalent thousands of years ago but that they stopped before any proof or irrefutable recording could be made. In short, if these things happened at all surely they would still be going on from time to time.
