Why Americans should support the military
This is a question that needs to be answered with a question first and then explained. The question, "Do you enjoy the freedom you live in and is this what you want for you children and future generations?"
We as Americans live in a country that provides freedom like no other country in the world. This is not a free gift, nor a gift that can last without protection. There are many who believe they can live in this country with no military, the rest of the world will love us, and we can all live in peace. They live their life in a dream world totally out of reality. They protest against every mission the military goes into. These people seem to have forgotten that these brave men and women go into harms way to protect the freedom they have to protest. There seems to be a sense of complacency in this great nation, and it is a very disturbing situation. Ever since World War 2 winning a war seems to have gone the way of the horse and buggy.
In 1917, the U.S. entered World War 1 to help England defeat the German war machine from dominating Europe and then our country. The German submarines, U-boats where sinking unarmed passenger ships with American passengers on board. The reasons for entry are not an issue in this discussion but the fact that an army that fought to defeat an enemy and keep this nation free. In World War 2, we have a nation hell-bent on taking over the nations of Europe and a nation that attacked us killing thousands. However, the bravery of the men and women to go and fight so they, their families, and future generations could live in freedom should be enough to answer the question.
The conflicts we are involved in at the present time present complex issues which are a topic for another discussion. But the bravery and determination of our military personnel is very evident and reflects the spirit of our forefathers to defend this freedom for not just our generation but for the generations to come. What more can you ask of these young warriors who voluntarily go into harms way to keep us free. Then when tour of duty is over many volunteer to go back to the conflict and continue doing the job. What more could you ask of someone? Is this not enough to give them the support and praise of a job well done?
This is being written by a Viet Nam veteran, therefore I speak from a first hand experience of doing a thankless job, surviving, and coming home to hate.
If the freedoms this nation affords it's citizens are not enough to support the military and the sacrifices of the one's who serve, then there are no reasons anyone could put forth to change that mind. Therefore, the question at the beginning of this discussion is yours to answer for yourself and the future generations to come.
