Poetry: Combat

by Carrie Frank

Created on: March 20, 2008

A soldier down, so full of life,
Just earlier today,
Raised his eyes, so weary,
And, struggled just to pray.

"Let Mom know, I love her,
Show Dad, I've made him proud,"
I memorized the words he said,
As Andy prayed out loud.

"Please, give my family comfort,
God, guide them threw the pain,
Help them see I know,
That I did not die in vain."

"I may have saved some lives,
And, I'm sure that I was saved,
Today, I'm just as sure,
That today's my final day."

"Lord, I don't need the strength,
Tto pull threw one last time,
I know it's time to join you,
That's OK, I'm fine."

"But, my mom and dad, they love me,
And, I worry that they'll cry,
But, I want them to know, I love them, too,
And, I know that it's my time."

"We knew that this could happen,
But, when we said good-bye,
I told mom I loved her,
And, I told her I'd be fine."

As Andy said these words aloud,
I held on to his hand,
And, watched the boy who went to war,
Die a hero and a man.
