Short stories: Unrequited love

Angels Are Real

It was a busy day at work when I first saw her. She stood about 5'5, caramel colored skin, with a tattoo of a butterfly on her right wrist. And totally out of my league. When Prince composed and sung "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World", he must have been talking about her, because this woman was everything he spoke about and more. Her walk was like the graceful movement of a trained ballerina, elegant, yet seductive. She had the face of the goddess of love, Aphrodite, the voice of heaven, and a body that any man want to leave his woman. And here I was, like a schoolboy, with a crush on his beautiful teacher. Problem was, I had this irritant at home. That pest that nearly everyone has at one point or another in their lives. A significant other, or in my case, a insignificant bugger.

I remember being shy and just speaking to her in passing, sending notes and messages, you know, like you do in school. Not the ones where you write, "do you like me, check yes or no", and it has the two boxes with yes and no written beside them. More like, a note with my name and phone number. I never got the courage to talk to her face to face, until one day, she was at her work station and I stepped up and started talking. And I was melting inside, every time she spoke. I would stand there and take deep breaths, just to breathe the air that she exhaled, almost to the point of hyperventilating.

We became fast friends after that, we talked about various topics, like our children, what our goals in life were, our family life, and hobbies. I found out that she was in college, and like a typical bonehead, I blurted out, "if you need any help with writing a paper, just call me". Not smooth. She wasn't looking for a relationship, but just someone to talk to, you know not too often, someone kept at a distance.

Things slowly began to change between us after awhile and our quick friendship faded faster than the Boston Red Sox in the '86 World Series. I was ending a bad relationship and she was concentrating on her studies. Out of respect, I toned down my pursuit. I felt alone inside, empty, like a baby's bottle. She was all the things that I was looking for, but I didn't know if she felt the same. To this day, I still don't know. I realized at that moment, that I was falling for her, and hard. It hit me like a Mack truck on the freeway at 80 miles an hour.

She and I talked and texted messaged each other periodically, but never went on a date. he only time I ever saw her outside of work was when she was headed to an outing with her girlfriends, and we met up at the record store. She was even more beautiful outside of work. From head to toe, perfect. And I was falling.

Fast-forward to September 2007...

I was scheduled for lower back surgery, and the possibility of returning to work was slim. While waiting in my room, my cell phone began buzzing. It was a text message from the one I loved. She heard from the grapevine that I was going under the knife, and wanted to let me know that she was here if needed. I made it through surgery just fine knowing she still considered me a friend.

She's probably going to read this sometime in the near future, so I'll just put it out there. You know how I feel, no distance will separate us, no war, nor famine will destroy us. Because you are that truth, and I've come to understand and I'm convinced that Angels Are Real.
