Kids! Make a Delta-Wing Paper Airplane !
Everyone loves paper airplanes. The best ones will fly gracefully across the room, or if in the outdoors, they can soar on the wind in the most amazing way. There are many designs of paper airplanes, but one of the best is the Delta-Wing. A Delta wing is a triangular-shaped aircraft that has superior flying characteristics.
Here is how to build one.
For materials, you will need one rectangular sheet of paper, 8-1/2 by 11 , or a piece of ordinary project paper about the same size. A sheet of computer or writing paper will work just fine for this project.
The plane is created by simply folding the paper repeatedly. Work on a flat surface like a table or desk so that you can make the folds and creases straight.
Here is how you fold it:
1.On the long dimension, fold the paper in half lengthwise and make a sharp crease line.
2.Unfold it so that it is laying flat.
3.Fold both corners on the same end over to the center at the crease line. Both corners should now be on the crease line. You now have a point on one end and angles on each side.
4.Fold both angles on the side to the center crease line.
5. Crease the folds sharply. You should now have a triangle with both sides equal.
6. From the point, and along the center crease, fold both sides together so they match perfectly. You should now have a pointed triangle with one right angle.
7. Right from the point, fold each ANGLED side to the center line crease again.
Make the creases very straight and even.
Your plane now has wings !
8. Relax the last two folds and straighten the wings out so that the top of the airplane is flat.
If you look at the back end of your plane, it will look "T"-shaped, and the top should look like a "Delta" or triangular surface. You now have an aerodynamic paper plane.
9. For safety, especially for younger children, clip off about 1" of the pointed nose with scissors.
10. To keep the airplane from "unfolding" , staple it together just under the wing close to the nose , and staple it again, about half way down.
Test fly it. Experiment with it. You can change the flight characteristics by adding weight to the nose or to the back end under the wings. It will soar beautifully with a single paper clip on the back end. You can even make it spin around by folding back a small corner on one wing so that it points up or down.
Decorate your paper airplane with coloured pencils or crayon.
Have fun!
