Movie reviews: Juno

When you hear what 'Juno' is all about you probably figure that this is something made for the small screen rather than those big cinema screens, and you would be right - the plot to this movie could have easily been dragged out and made for an excellent American television series, discovering more about the lifes and times of Juno MacGuff (Ellen Page). Fortunately this movie build up so much hype that it managed to get those bottoms in seats, and some how a teen drama became an Oscar winner. Usually when the academy is dishing out awards I'm sitting there thinking it looks good, but I just won't be bothering with it, but with Juno is felt as though it had been tailor made to begin my understanding of what the Oscar panel actually look for. Now, whilst I can understand a victory on the basis of Juno being a witty (potentially, irritating) 16 year old, I'm not sure her acting ability makes this movie worthy of such a huge tag. Maybe I should be glad I don't see all Oscar winners.

I was mainly concerned of how they would fill the 96 minutes, and what aspects of a teenage pregnancy they would show. I guess I must have been underestimating what sort of head strong character a girl named Juno would be, as I was all set for the tragic punching herself in the stomache before throwing herself down the stairs as she struggles to remember who the father actually is. Nah, Juno isn't like that, she knows what she wants in life. Opening the movie she is already up the duff and drinking a family sized container of Sunny D on her way to take yet another pregnancy test. There is no claiming this positive sign looks like a division on a third attempt, and for all those who believe they would break down crying whether happy or sad whatever the outcome of one of these tests, this movie strays from the realms of realism that even I have experienced in my life. This could be put down to Juno struggling to really come to terms with it, or perhaps because its pregnancy meets Hollywood.

There is a strong indy infulence on the movie, meaning it isn't exactly a Hollyoaks storyline, and the opening to the movie is very artistically done as Juno walks along all cartoonized. I was concerned that perhaps they would delve into telling the story in cartoon at some points, but thankfully that opening scene was just a one-off. The movie is broken up into the four seasons, and at the beginning when the movie said 'Autumn' I was just sitting there thinking whether or not it said 'Fall'
