Writing tips for Helium writers

Writing on Helium can be one of the most entertaining and even profitable endeavors that you can engage in. However, Helium can sometimes be confusing for new writers. While reading the User Guide can give you the big picture, you really need to spend some quality time writing and reading on Helium to truly figure out what sort of writing works best.

Here are some writing tips for Helium writers that I have gathered:

* Write in areas that you love. If you don't like writing about a topic, you probably aren't going to write effectively about that topic. While there are exceptions, most folks write more effectively when they are interested.

* Read up on ratings, and spend time doing ratings yourself. Getting to that #1 spot in your topic can be challenging. Learning about how other people rate, by reading their articles on the topic and by watching the Community discussions, can help you get a better feel for what raters are looking for. In addition, doing ratings yourself helps to sharpen your proofreading eye and make you much more effective at proofreading your own work.

* Learn to accept the occasional disappointment. The fact of the matter is that every writer experiences rejection. Whether it is losing a contest, not being selected in the marketplace, or finding yourself at the bottom of the ratings on a topic, you can count on having some disappointment on Helium. This experience is not unique to Helium; if you're going to write, you're going to have it.

* Use Leapfrog to your advantage. The ratings system should, ideally, help you to improve your writing. When you have an article that is 20 out of 20, you should spend some time proofreading and rewriting the article.

* Know your grammar and spelling rules. Poor grammar and spelling will get you quickly rated down at Helium. Learn proper formatting techniques, too, because an unattractive article will tend to be rated lower.

* Use the Community. Ask for advice when you are struggling. Use the message boards or other individual writers. Ask for help if you need it. The Helium staff, the stewards, and many of the other writers will be glad to give you a hand if you ask.
