US elections 2008: How campaign sparring between Clinton and Obama benefits McCain

As the Super Tuesday II contests on March 4 have taken place, there is clearly no clear Democratic nominee. In the case of the GOP, Senator John McCain of Arizona has cemented the party's nomination. However, Senators Barack Obama of Illinois and Hillary Clinton of New York are still at frontrunner status. As a result, the two of them are still fighting it out.

The first way that McCain benefits from the sparring between Obama and Clinton provides him with ammunition to launch at the eventual Democratic nominee. In the recent reports and current progress of the Democratic races, Obama and Clinton are in a slugfest. The Democratic Party itself looks to be hurting very badly.

One teaching provided in Sun Tze's "Art of War" is to let the enemy arm you. Take the ammunition that your enemy uses. That way, you are being supplied by your enemy. Also, you do not have to exhaust your reserves of ammunition. It is highly likely that John McCain has a reserve of political ammunition to use against either Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton.

However, John McCain is smart. He is not going to use any of his ammunition on either Clinton or Obama at the moment. In McCain's case, he is going to wait until the general race against the eventual Democratic nominee.

In the case of the Democrats, it could possibly be up to the superdelegates that decide whether Obama or Clinton receives the nomination. There is a high chance that this could possibly be decided at the Democratic National Convention. Should that happen, it gives McCain more than the ample amount of time to prepare an offense and strengthen his defense.

McCain can just sit back and watch the political fist fight between Obama and Clinton. The more they fight; the more damage they suffer. That would mean, McCain has to use little to no energy on either Clinton or Obama.

So far, McCain's biggest platforms in regards to his candidacy have been Iraq and national security. The recent ad launched by Hillary Clinton dubbed as the "3 AM" ad before the March 4 contests was like an inadvertent suicide attack. It caused Obama to lose the Texas primary. However, it had come to haunt Clinton. McCain capitalized and said that he would be the one to answer the phone at 3 AM and make the decision.

Everything that blows up in the faces of Obama and/or Clinton, McCain can capitalize and take advantage.

This is the one issue that McCain has much time to strengthen his view on. Recently, McCain had gone on a trip to the Middle East with Independent
