If you only have one computer, should you choose a desktop or a laptop?

Currently, I have two computers. One is a desktop model and the other is a laptop. I would hardly call it having the best of both worlds. In fact, they are both old and slow. I do good to get them to sign online, much less, anything else. I would like nothing more than to hurl them both out the window.

If I could only throw one computer out in the yard, it would be the laptop. I am not just saying that because it is the lighter of the two either. There are actually many pros and cons to having both computers but when it comes to preferences, I like my desktop computer.

Part of my computer preference is based on what I know and am used to. Until recently, I had never been around a computer other than a desktop. I still don't know everything there is to know about them. Although desk and laptops are similar, there are still far too many differences that could complicate my simple mind.

With my desktop, I always know where everything is. I always have a designated work area where my computer is set up. I don't have to unplug or charge anything. Everything is always plugged in and set up. It is ready to be used as is.

The laptop is a good idea in theory but really the standard size is just too small for me. The screen is tiny and the graphics make my eyes hurt. The keyboard is way too tiny for my long fingernails. I can't type a single sentence and understand what it says because of all the errors. The mouse on my laptop is super sticky. If you just barely tap it, it flies through pages. It is much too sensitive.

Laptops are portable and can be taken with the user. This is convenient for some but a distraction for others. If I am leaving the house, I don't need a computer. I need to focus on the errands that need to be run. I can play online when I get home. There is also no guarantee that the battery will stay charged. What good is taking a computer with you if you can't use it anyhow?

My computer has multiple users. My husband and my son aren't as gentle on things as I am. I could only imagine the many ways a laptop would be unintentionally abused in my home. None of us are very coordinated so I am sure the outcome would not be a good one.

When it comes down to it, computer choices are a matter of personal preference. What works for one person may not work for another. It is all in what you like. As for my family, and me we will stick with a desktop. It's much easier that way.
