Overcoming psychological obstacles to starting a new business

Starting a new business is not a piece of cake. It is a giant leap form the security of your salary and benefits as an employee to the risk and uncertainty of being an employer of labor.

Predictably for most people, there are massive psychological obstacles to starting a new business. What are these obstacles and how can they be overcome? That is the question that this writer intends to answer as this article progresses.

The greatest psychological obstacles for the would-be business man is fear. Nobody wants to leave the comfort and security of his job to plunge into the business world. But the fact is that there is more fulfillment and financial benefit in having your own business than in receiving a small but adequate income. So, overcome your fear and you are well on your way.

Again, most people have the dangerous habit of procrastination. They hesitate and delay instead of taking decisive action. Of course, the hesitation comes from fear and doubt. So, take decisive action and you will find yourself in the exciting world of business.

Pessimism and outright cynicism from other people are two obstacles to confront before you start your business. Your friends, colleagues and relations will tell you that you cannot do it. They will also point out examples of those who tried and failed. All these stories of doom are bound to affect you psychologically. The solution? Don't listen to them! Carry out your research and prepare adequately and you will prove them wrong in the long run. Remember that advice is cheap. More to the point, the business world is full of success stories who preferred not to listen to pessimistic and cynical "experts".

Apart from your friends creating psychological problems, you may also create some for yourself. How? You feel you don't have enough capital to start your business. You may also think the prevailing economic situation may not be right for you to make your move. Don't let these two things bother you. Most business men did not have as much capital as they would have preferred when they began. The trick is to start small and think big. As for the prevailing economic situation, I can tell you this bluntly: The economy always has cycles of recession and boom. In each case there massive opportunities for the bold business person.

So, now you know. Overcome your psychological obstacles and take decisive action. You can start that business if your really do want to. Good luck!
