Are you looking to begin a new hobby, but are not sure what to choose? Allow me to introduce you to a hobby which has been enjoyed by millions of people from all walks of life. For decades hobby enthusiasts of all ages have discovered the joy of model train building. No matter how much time you have available or how much you want to spend, model train building is flexible enough to be enjoyed by everyone.
So how would you start in pursuit of this new hobby? Decide first whether this is something you want to do just occasionally on a limited budget, or do you want to get really serious and design a railroad village that would be a contest contender(yes, they actually have contests). For the sake of this article, lets presume you just want to get started with basic model train building.
Here are a couple of things you need to think about when choosing a train set. There are 3 scale sizes when it comes to model trains: N scale, HO scale and G scale. The N scale trains are 1:160 scale(1 foot=.075 inches) and are the most popular of all model trains. This size allows for more train track to be used on a standard 4'x8' piece of plywood. HO scale trains are 1:87 scale(1 foot=.138 inches), and have the most models and train sets available. They also have an HO model Railroading Handbook that could be very useful for the beginning enthusiast. The G scale models are 1:22.5 scale(1 foot=.533 inches) and are the largest models in size. The G models are not as popular, but many people use them for garden designs, etc. You may not want to start with this model, but it could be something for you to consider later.
There are basically two main kinds of train models. Diesel model trains and Steam model trains. Both types have late or early models. If you are a pure old style enthusiast, you may want to choose the early models which can include all styles from the 1800's to the 1950's. The late models would include trains from the 1960's until today. These are the ones you generally see today. The best thing about model train building is the flexiblity you have in designing your model. It is completely up to your own style. You can design whatever you want.
One of the most popular names in Model Train Building is the Lionel brand. You can find out more about them through their website at www.lionel.com. This website will give you a complete guidebook on building your model ralroad. It takes you from finding the right kit for you all the way to competition building. With the advent of computers and computer games, model train companies had to find a way to compete in this new forum. So if you are just glued to your computer, they even have train sets you can design online.
There are literally dozens of model train manufacturers including such names like Blackstone Valley Railway, The Coach Yard, Intermountain Railway Company and K'line just to name a few. These companies also specialize in everything from brass train locomotives to wooden train tressles. Again, your models will only be limited by your creativity.
If you want a hobby that will give you hours of enjoyment while also being a great way to learn about design and engineering technology, thn model railroading is for you. Once you get into it, you won't want to stop. Have fun!
