The concept that Freelance writing is an easy career is fostered by the image of the writer sitting around in her jammys, munching out of a bag of Fritos. The reality is, the writer is in her jammys because she has seven articles due before 5 pm Pacific Time. The bag of Fritos is because that was the handiest thing to hand, and can be washed down with high octane coffee, which provides her with the energy to write the seven articles, answer the thirty-nine emails from editors convinced that only they are buying her stuff, and the one piece of fan mail she's had in a month.

For a writer it may be the best career going, but being a freelance writer is a job like any other. Rather it is a small business with all the complexities of any small business. The freelancer must not only write and market her work she must handle all the other aspects of owning and running a small business. It is not a career for the lazy or faint of heart.
