Flicking through the channels one night when my son was about four, we happened across a show with two men intertwined like a couple of pretzels."What's this my son asked"? I told him it was wrestling. With his eyes fixed to the screen he sat eagerly awaiting what the next move would be. That was it for him. He was hooked from that moment.
The WWE is watched faithfully in our house, with never an episode missed. Along with the wrestling there are always story lines full of love, hate, conspiracy, scandal and of course a splash of infidelity. I got to know all of their names and the story behind them. Who was a favorite and who were the dreaded bad guys which give the show that added flare.
I never knew exactly how entertaining it was until I took my son to see Summer Slam live. The look on his face when we got in amongst the crowd was good enough for me, or so I thought. We set off to find our seats. First row off the floor. What I didn't know was I had purchased seats right beside where the stars come into the arena. As the lights dimmed and the crowd became silent, you could feel the excitement in the air. Finally a bright light shone on the middle of the ring and the announcer started to talk. The crowd erupted into a thunderous roar of yells and cheers. To my surprise I was one of them. I had my arms in the air screaming like a mad woman. As the wrestlers entered the arena, there we were shaking their hands and slapping them on the back. The adrenalin was really flowing then. With every sound of flesh slapping on the canvas I was getting more fired up. I was chanting with the crowd to taunt certain wrestlers. What great fun. When the late great Eddie Guerrero entered the arena I went on like a silly little school girl. Try as I might, I couldn't help myself. I was even worse after he won his match. The thrill, the exhilaration, I just couldn't contain myself. I was having the time of my life. Entertainment, I'd say so.
I don't think I've had that much fun since, well, ever! My son and I still watch every week. It's something we do together, but I'm not exactly sure who is more entertained, him or me.
