Whether you're a seasoned train hobbyist or just getting started, buying online is a great way to build your collection. Most local hobby stores have a limited selection of trains and supplies but you can find almost anything your heart desires on the internet. If you have never tried shopping for trains online, let me suggest a few of the better websites.
MODEL TRAIN STUFF (www.modeltrainstuff.com)
This is the website of M.B.Klein which has been in business for nearly 100 years. On the site you will find a wide selection of trains and supplies at discount prices. All types of trains are offered including HO, Z, N, O and S scale and die cast models. The site is organized nicely into categories of trains, scenery, books and videos, sound and power, building supplies, and so forth. It is very easy to navigate and even has a search feature. There are weekly specials and you can pay for your order with any major credit card. Of all the online train hobby sites, I find this one to have one of the best selections at good prices and it's associated with a trustworthy company.
DISCOUNT TRAINS ONLINE (www.discounttrainsonline)
This site is similar to modeltrainstuff but is a bit less comprehensive. They offer many brands of HO, N, O, and G scale models, electric train sets, and some supplies. The website is also well organized with nice photos and graphics and there is a clearance section for the bargain shopper. The biggest benefit of shopping at this site is the shipping rate. You pay a flat $7.95 shipping per order, no matter how large. Gift certificates are also available which is nice if you are looking for a gift for a train collector.
GRAHAM'S TRAINS (www.grahamstrains.com)
If you're a serious train collector, you'll definitely want to check out Graham's Trains. Although the selection isn't very big, you can find specific items at deeply discounted prices. Looking for a certain switch or terminal joiner? Graham's will likely have one. What sets this website apart from the others is the fact that Graham's will buy your unwanted trains and supplies. They also give tips for selling your trains via other methods.
WHOLESALE TRAINS (www.wholesaletrains.com)
This website specializes in all types of models including trains, airplaines, and vehicles as well as scenery and supplies. Although the appearance of the site is a bit more cluttered than the others I've mentioned, there is much to be found here. They offer standard, HO, S, G, O, and N scale trains at sale prices. There is a very wide selection, however when searching the inventory pay attention to the "lead time" listed. Some items are available immediately while others are on order. If you can't find an item on another site, Wholesale Trains is a good place to look, although you may have to wait a few days for the item to become available.
These are a few of the best online stores for model railroads. If you don't find what you're looking for, try some of the train collector forums online where hobbyists like you chat and share ideas. Someone will be happy to point you in the right direction and help you find just the item you need.
