Personal toilet cleanliness

is a good rule to follow in a world that shakes hands using the right hand. Many poorer countries that can not afford a bidet spray system simply use a bottle or watering can such that is used for watering plants. The thin spout helps direct the water in a concentrated stream. To ensure complete cleanliness and to avoid the need for toilet paper, most cultures use their left hand to gently wash while applying the water with the right hand. Most American do this in the shower, so the thought of having waste on your hand is really nothing new. Proper washing with water and soap removes all the waste product from your hands. Interestingly, in countries where washing of the hands without soap or warm water is common, the microbes that remain on the hand may in fact be a protection or a constant inoculation from bacteria that might otherwise kill people living in less sanitary conditions where public water supplies may not have very high standards.

When out on the trail, away from water sources, a common trick is to use three round smooth rocks to remove any fecal matter. Many campers may tell you of their experience using a leaf from a tree. If water is not available to wash up afterward, dirt or sand makes a good cleaning agent. When water is available but no soap, try using some cool ashes from your camp fire. Pot ash is a main ingredient in making soap and the lye from the ash makes a great cleaner. Make sure to rinse well as the ash combined with water can be a bit harsh.
