be brought back from the past as it is part of our heritage and culture which has been forgotten.
Herbal medicines are a natural effective method of treating illness and have been proven to sometimes be more efficient than prescription medicine especially in problems relating to stress, anxiety, tension and depression.
Herbs are free from toxicity and are not habitual because they are organic substances and therefore are extremely good for balancing the nervous system and helping us to relax.
Herbal medicine can be administered in a few ways.
The capsule is a gelatine container which can hold oils or balsams that are difficult to swallow or might taste horrid. These can be bought from the health shop usually in bottles of 30, things like slippery elm or St John's Wort would come in capsule form.
A Decoction is made by preparing the root or bark of a plant, put it in a bowl and pour over hot water, leave it to stand for around twenty minutes and then let cool, once it has been strained it can be drank.
A Herbal Dressing can be made by soaking cloth or cotton wool in a cold or warm herbal decoction, these can be made out of dried herbs as well as fresh one's. A poultice which is the bruised leaves or root of herbs put straight onto the skin, or a paste made from ground up herbs dampened then put onto the skin. Things like comfrey leaves can be good in a dressing to help reduce bruising.
An Infusion is a hot drink made with hot water poured onto the herb and strained, drink when cool.
Pills can also be bought from the health shops for various herbs, having a good look at what's on offer is good as sometimes the health shops do the buy one get one free offer, or promote a certain herb now and then.
A Tincture is made with alcohol and the herbs are chopped and dried then added to a little alcohol, this is then left for about two weeks and the mixture can then be racked into another bottle and used as required.
Different herbs fall into different categories and some herbs can be used for the same action.
They can be used as an antiseptic, astringent, tonic, stimulant, sedative and of course an aphrodisiac. As well as having other properties too.
If you were looking for an Antiseptic herb you would choose the garlic, sandalwood, woundwort, olive, thyme, camphor, bergamot or beech as well as some others which are to many just to jot down.
I will list a few in each category to give you an idea if your looking for something with a certain action.
