US presidential elections 2008: Presidential candidate pros and cons

The 2008 presidential elections will be remembered as one of the most groundbreaking events in American history. The country's next president will be an African American, a former first lady or a war hero. Here is a look at the positive and negative aspects of three of the most fascinating candidates to ever run for president:

BARACK OBAMA

If elected, Senator Obama will be the nation's first African American president.

He has impeccable academic credentials, a history of championing the underdog and often referred to as the most powerful orator the political world has seen in awhile.

Supporters turn out in droves to hear his inspirational campaign speeches. While his voting record reflects a liberal agenda, Obama's most notable quality is based in his platform as an agent for change. His plan to unite the America, regardless of race, gender or faith, is making him the pied piper of politics.

His inexperience does leave him open to criticism. But the most potentially damaging attacks involve his personal affiliations. An endorsement from Louis Farrakhan, the controversial Muslim leader, and his connections to a former business cohort may reveal a weak spot. The recently released video of his former pastor and mentor preaching racially charged, divisive language may prove to be the most damaging of all.

HILLARY CLINTON

Clinton has drawn criticism for her campaign mismanagement, her inability to connect with people and the recent racially controversial statements made by her supporter, Geraldine Ferraro. Detractors portray her as a ruthless, far-left liberal.

The former first lady is accomplished in her own right. Senator Clinton has been praised for her tireless work on powerful senate committees and her position on women's rights. Her campaign platform promotes universal health care and education, popular issues with many Americans. Yet Clinton's tenacity may be her best quality of all, managing to survive more than one White House scandal and continuously reviving her presidential campaign.

JOHN MCCAIN

Americans admire a war hero, so naturally his military achievement is viewed as a plus. However, a lifetime of military achievement does not exempt him from scrutiny.

His stand on immigration reform closely aligns with liberals, drawing public criticism from fellow Republicans. Many perceive McCain's recent attempts to distance himself from religious evangelicals as mistake, without their support it may be difficult to win. Would-be supporters find his hot temper and colorful language distasteful.

The senator votes conservatively, earning high marks for his pro-life stand on abortion and as a proponent of capital punishment. His reputation for attacking pork barrel spending and working with Democrats on common issues is impressive. Many appreciate his unifying qualities and bipartisan approach.
