While it is generally illegal to download the full version of a commercial game without paying its author, there are many OLDER commercial games that have been made available for free and you won't get in trouble for playing. The most legal site for this sort of thing is Liberated Games (http://www.liberatedgames.com /) It collects and provides links to games that have been affirmatively made freeware or open source by their publishers. A few of these games are not really playable in their free form (you still need to pay for the data files which are still sold) but most will work out of the box (or in this case, the file)
Another good place to find good old games to play for free is Abandonia (http://www.abandonia.com/). While the games here haven't been officially cleared by their original authors the way the games at Liberated Games were, all the games on this site are from companies which don't really mind their old games being made available unofficially. In addition to this site's large collection of games, it also has excellent reviews and a wonderful message board. Highly recommended.
The final thing to remember is that there are plenty of good free and open source games available if you know where to look. Most tend to be remakes of old-school classics, but people make new games too. The best place to find these games is Abandonia's sister site, Abandonia Reloaded. (http://www.reloaded.org/) The site has the same great features (kickass rewiews, lots of screenshots and a great community) of Abandonia, but focuses on the best newly created freeware as well as the VERY best of freeware-rerelease old games.
With these three sites, you should be able to keep yourself both entertained AND out of jail without spending a penny.
